Three things happened recently that are worth knowing before you start.

An AI solved a biology problem that had stumped scientists for fifty years — in about a year. It won the Nobel Prize. A separate AI found a promising new antibiotic candidate in 48 hours; traditional methods would have taken years. Another is reading medical scans for early cancer signs with accuracy that matches human specialists — without ever getting tired.

This isn’t a fancier search engine. Something genuinely different is happening. And the version of it you can try right now, for free, in your browser, is more capable than most people realize.

What AI actually is

The Sixty-Second Explanation

You don’t need to understand how it works to use it well — the same way you don’t need to understand combustion to drive a car. But a rough sense of what’s happening helps you use it better and know when to trust it.

The AI tools you’re about to try — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini — are called large language models. They were trained on an enormous amount of text: books, research papers, websites, conversations, code. Through that training, they learned to generate helpful, coherent responses to whatever you type.

They are not looking things up while you wait. They are generating a response based on patterns from everything they’ve absorbed — which is why they’re remarkably capable and also why they can occasionally be confidently wrong. Fluency is not the same as accuracy. You’ll learn to calibrate for that quickly.

But for what we’re doing today? That limitation barely comes up. Let’s get in.

Make Something — Free AI Image Generation

The fastest way to understand what AI can do is to make something with it. We’re starting here because it requires nothing, and the results are immediate and often genuinely surprising.

1 Go to bing.com/create in your browser.
2 Type a description of something you’d like to see. Be specific — the more detail, the more interesting the result. Try one of these or write your own:
“A golden retriever wearing a tiny business suit, sitting at a mahogany desk, coffee mug in front of him, looking extremely serious. Photorealistic.”
“An aerial view of a small fishing village in Norway in winter, early morning light, snow on the rooftops. Oil painting style.”

What to notice: You described something in plain English and a computer rendered it visually in seconds. The technology behind this is the same class of capability being applied to drug discovery and cancer detection. You just touched the edge of it.

Have a Real Conversation — Claude

Go to claude.ai and create a free account. Then try one of the prompts below — whichever matches something actually going on in your life right now.

Key thing before you type: this is a conversation, not a search bar. Give it context. Tell it who you are and what you’re dealing with. The more specific, the more useful the response.

“I have a job interview next week for [job title]. I’ve been in [your field] for [X years] but this would be a step up. What questions should I prepare for and how should I think about answering them?”
“I just received a letter from [insurance / IRS / my landlord / my bank] that I don’t fully understand. I’m going to paste it below. Can you explain what it’s saying and what I need to do?”
“I want to understand [topic you’ve always been curious about]. Explain it to me like I’m smart but have zero background in this.”
“I need to write an email to [my boss / a client / my landlord] about [situation]. I want to be clear and professional but not aggressive. Help me draft something.”

What to notice: It adapts to what you give it. It doesn’t talk down to you. Try a follow-up — respond to what it said and push further. That’s where it starts to feel like a real conversation.

Try the Other One — ChatGPT

Go to chat.openai.com and create a free account. Now try the exact same prompt you used in Activity 2 — word for word.

You’re not looking for a winner. You’re building an instinct. These tools feel meaningfully different to use — the same way different people give different advice on the same problem. Neither is always right. Both are worth knowing.

What to notice: How does the tone differ? The length? What it chose to emphasize? Most people end up with a preference. ChatGPT tends to be structured and direct. Claude tends toward more conversational depth. Form your own opinion.

Before You Move On

At some point in these activities, AI probably gave you something impressive. It may also have said something slightly off. Both are normal and both are worth paying attention to.

AI is a capable collaborator with blind spots. The skill isn’t blind trust — it’s knowing when to push back, when to verify, and when to take the output and run with it. You’ll develop that instinct fast.

Not the polished demos. Not the LinkedIn posts. What real people are quietly using these tools for while the debate about AI rages around them.

Nurse, rural hospital

Translates complex diagnoses into plain language patients can actually understand. They follow through on care instructions more often.

First-gen college student

No one in his family had applied to a professional job before. Used AI to write, revise, and prepare. Got the offer.

DeepMind’s AlphaFold solved a 50-year-old biology problem, predicting the 3D shape of virtually every known protein. Drug discovery and disease research changed overnight. Work that took scientists entire careers is now a searchable database.

AI scanned 100 million molecules and identified a promising candidate against MRSA in 48 hours. Traditional drug discovery would have taken years to cover the same ground.

Why This Connects to What You Just Did

The same fundamental capability — learning patterns from enormous amounts of data and generating useful outputs — powers AlphaFold and powers Claude and ChatGPT. The scale differs. The architecture differs. But the underlying shift is the same.

When you asked AI to help with an email or explain something confusing, you were using an accessible application of the same technology finding antibiotics and predicting hurricanes. That’s not inflation — it’s context. And context matters when you’re deciding how much attention to pay to something.
