The AI Timeline: What People Say Happens 2026–2030

Everyone has a prediction. The CEO of Microsoft AI says white-collar automation arrives within 18 months. The CEO of Anthropic says AGI — AI broadly better than humans at almost everything — lands by 2027. Elon Musk said 2026. A Nobel laureate economist says the disruption is real but the panic is overblown. Forecasting researchers have watched their own timelines slip longer every few months as reality moves slower than the models predicted.

None of them agree on the timing. Most of them agree on the direction. And sorting through all of it — the confident predictions, the quiet revisions, the viral doomsday scenarios, the rebuttal reports — is genuinely difficult for someone who has a job to do and doesn’t track AI research for a living.

This is our attempt to lay it out cleanly. Who is saying what, what the data actually shows so far, and what the next five years look like based on the current trajectory. We’ll update this post as the picture changes — and it will change.

A note on predictions

The people making these predictions are not disinterested observers. CEOs of AI companies have financial and reputational reasons to sound confident about big timelines. Skeptics have their own track records to protect. We’ve tried to note where incentives are relevant and let you weight accordingly.


Starting point

Where Things Actually Stand Right Now (March 2026)

Before the timeline, the baseline. Because you can’t evaluate a five-year forecast without knowing what’s already happened.

In the first two months of 2026 alone, 32,000 jobs were cut in technology firms. In all of 2025, nearly 55,000 layoffs were directly attributed to AI by companies announcing them — out of 1.17 million total layoffs, the highest level since the pandemic. Oracle announced layoffs this month targeting specific job categories it expects AI to replace. Amazon’s internal documents showed it expects to avoid hiring 160,000 workers in the US by 2027 due to automation.

At the same time: overall unemployment is not spiking. New jobs are being created. Harvard’s data shows routine job postings falling while analytical and creative postings grow. The Dallas Fed shows experienced workers’ wages rising sharply in AI-exposed fields. The picture isn’t uniformly dark — it’s a split, and the split is measurable and already underway.

That’s the starting line. Now, what do the people closest to this think happens next.

2026

Now — The disruption becomes visible

This is the year most researchers agree the effects shift from theoretical to observable. Not economy-wide collapse — visible disruption in specific roles and industries.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman said in February 2026 that most white-collar work — lawyers, accountants, project managers, marketers — could be automated within 12 to 18 months. That puts his line in the sand between mid-2026 and late-2027. He specifically said “sitting down at a computer” work is in the crosshairs.

Dario Amodei (Anthropic) told Davos 2026 that AGI — AI broadly better than humans at almost all cognitive tasks — could arrive by late 2026 or 2027, possibly sooner than widely expected. He described the near-term impact as a potential “white-collar bloodbath” for junior professionals in structured roles.

Gartner predicted that by 2026, 20% of large organizations will use AI to flatten management structures, eliminating over half of current middle-management positions in those companies.

Sam Altman (OpenAI) set a target of building an “intern-level AI research assistant” by September 2026 — an AI that can contribute meaningfully to scientific and engineering work alongside humans.

What the skeptics say

MIT Nobel laureate economist Daron Acemoglu told NPR in February 2026 that the disruption is real but the apocalyptic framing is premature. Citadel Securities’ analysts argued current adoption data simply doesn’t show AI moving fast enough to cause economy-wide displacement yet. CNN called the viral doomsday scenarios “AI doomer fan-fiction” while acknowledging real pressure on specific roles like entry-level coding.

2027

The year most forecasters are watching most closely

2027 is the most contested year in AI forecasting right now. It was the original “most likely year” for AGI in the AI 2027 scenario published by leading forecasters — but their own models have since revised timelines out by 1 to 3 years as 2025 progress came in slower than predicted.

Sam Altman wants a “legitimate AI researcher” — one that can fully automate AI R&D — by 2028, but expects AI agents to be doing significant novel knowledge work by 2027. He described 2027 as potentially the year AI can “figure out novel insights” rather than just applying existing knowledge.

Masayoshi Son (SoftBank) predicted in February 2025 that AGI arrives in 2027 or 2028. Shane Legg (DeepMind co-founder) put a 50% probability on “minimal AGI” — an AI that can reliably do the full range of average human cognitive tasks — by 2028.

Amazon’s internal projections show 2027 as the year automation reaches critical mass in fulfillment — avoiding hiring 160,000 US workers. Half of US car dealers surveyed expect AI to sell vehicles autonomously by 2027, handling listings, buyer questions, financing, and closing without human input.

One widely-circulated research scenario predicted that by mid-2027, AI agents would run in the background of most devices — writing code, handling multi-week research projects, optimizing finances — and that the US economy could tip into recession as displaced white-collar workers flood lower-wage roles. Most mainstream economists consider that scenario too aggressive, but the underlying mechanism — job loss outpacing job creation during a transition period — is not dismissed.

What the skeptics say

Gary Marcus (AI researcher) has placed a 10-to-1 public bet that AI won’t accomplish specified AGI-level tasks by end of 2027, arguing large language models have hit diminishing returns and that hallucinations are architecturally unsolvable without fundamental changes. Progress in early 2026 came in at roughly 65% of the pace the AI 2027 forecasters predicted — which is why their own medians have shifted.

2028

Where most serious forecasters currently place the inflection

After revisions in early 2026, 2028 has become the most common median estimate among serious AI researchers for transformative capability thresholds. “Around 2028, lots of uncertainty though” is now a representative answer from the forecasters who were predicting 2027 a year ago.

TSMC CEO C.C. Wei stated explicitly that advanced chip supply is physically constrained until 2028-2029. This is a hard physical limit — you can’t train more capable AI without the chips, and the chips can’t be made faster than the fabs can produce them. That constraint is one of the main reasons forecasts have stretched: the infrastructure isn’t keeping up with the ambition.

Forecasters surveyed across Metaculus and prediction markets (1,700 participants) put the median date for “the first weakly general AI system publicly announced” at February 2028. A separate survey of 178 participants placed the first AI to pass a long, informed adversarial Turing test at April 2029.

One scenario model estimates that by 2028, AI will be deeply embedded in enough business processes that further efficiency-driven cuts accelerate — with job losses in autonomous IT support, supply chain planning, and healthcare administration becoming significant. McKinsey’s estimate: at least 14% of the global workforce needing to change careers by 2030, with 2028 as the period when that pressure becomes acute.

What the skeptics say

Fei-Fei Li (Stanford AI pioneer) argues that AGI won’t be complete without spatial intelligence — the ability to understand and navigate the 3D physical world — which she sees as a much harder problem than language. Paul Christiano (Head of Safety at the US AI Safety Institute) puts only 15% probability on transformative AI by 2030. The Yale Budget Lab’s analysis of US labor market data found no massive shift in job distribution through 2025 — though researchers note 2025 data may be the leading edge, not the full signal.

2029–2030

The horizon where models get uncertain fast

Beyond 2028, forecasts diverge sharply. The optimistic and pessimistic scenarios become very different worlds, and which path gets taken depends heavily on variables that aren’t known yet — how fast regulation moves, whether a major AI-driven economic disruption triggers a political response, how quickly new jobs emerge to absorb displaced workers.

Jensen Huang (Nvidia) predicted in 2024 that within five years — by 2029 — AI would match or surpass human performance on any test. His company is building toward that: Nvidia’s Ruben Ultra platform, targeting 15 exaflops of performance, is scheduled for 2027, with the next generation following in 2029.

Kalshi prediction markets (January 2026) show a 40% chance OpenAI achieves AGI by 2030. AI Frontiers researchers estimate 80% probability of AGI by 2030. Sam Altman has publicly said he expects AGI “within a few thousand days” — which from his 2024 statement puts it around 2032-2035.

The World Economic Forum’s estimate: by 2030, roles involving AI development, cybersecurity, business intelligence, and sustainability will grow substantially, while routine analytical and administrative roles continue contracting. The net employment effect is positive in their model — but unevenly distributed, with workers who didn’t reskill during the transition period bearing most of the cost.

The Bank of England is now war-gaming this range — an AI economic shock scenario modeled alongside recessions and financial crises. The fact that a central bank stress-tests for it at all suggests institutional expectation that something significant is coming in this window.

What the skeptics say

A synthesis of 29 leading AI researchers weighted by expertise places the median arrival of transformative AI around 2035-2040, with only 25-35% probability by 2030. Andrej Karpathy, one of the most respected voices in the field, said his personal timelines are “5 to 10 times more pessimistic” than the most aggressive forecasts — suggesting the true inflection may be further out than the loudest voices claim.


The honest read

What To Make Of All This

The range of predictions is genuinely wide. Someone saying AGI arrives in 2027 and someone saying 2040 aren’t making similar claims with different numbers — they’re describing fundamentally different versions of the next decade. That uncertainty is real, and you shouldn’t let anyone flatten it for you in either direction.

What most serious observers — optimists and skeptics alike — do agree on: the direction of travel is toward more AI capability and more labor market impact, not less. The disputes are about how fast and how severe, not whether.

The most useful frame isn’t “will this happen” but “what position do I want to be in when it does.” Harvard’s data already shows the job market splitting along the lines that forecasters predicted. The Dallas Fed already shows the wage premium going to workers who combine experience with AI fluency. Those trends don’t require AGI or any specific forecast to be correct — they’re observable now.

We’ll update this post as timelines shift — and they will shift. Forecasters have already revised once since early 2025. The next revision could go either direction. What we’ll track is who was right, who revised and why, and what the actual data shows as each year passes.

What to do with this

The Part That Applies To You Regardless of Who’s Right

The AGI debate — whether it arrives in 2027 or 2040 — is important but it’s not the most actionable question for most working people. The more useful question is: what’s already happening, and what positions people well regardless of which timeline proves correct.

The Harvard data and the Dallas Fed data give you something more useful than a prediction: a measurement. Routine jobs are already contracting. Analytical and creative roles are already growing. Experienced workers using AI tools are already seeing wage premiums. Those patterns hold whether AGI arrives in 2027 or 2035.

Which means the five-year question isn’t really “when does the inflection happen.” It’s “are you building toward the side of the split that’s growing, or staying on the side that’s contracting.” That question you can answer right now, and the answer doesn’t require any forecast to be correct.
